"MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. — Former Air Force pilot Rick Perry stood aboard
a decommissioned
aircraft carrier off the South Carolina coast this
week, looking for a smooth landing in a state heavily influenced by the
military.
Perry is making winning the Palmetto State a key cog in his strategy to rise from the bottom of the Republican presidential polls. Perry sees conservative voters bonding with him through military experience, while enticed by his record as Texas governor, where he takes credit for job creation, economic vitality and strong conservatism.
South Carolina is home of the first Southern primary, and it’s often a make-or-break contest for Republicans.
“We’re serious about making this a successful run,” said Katon Dawson, a Perry strategist and former chairman of the South Carolina GOP." RCP
