Bush on Anchor Babies

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush wrangled with reporters during a press conference after a town hall-style meeting at the Cheshire County Historical Society Thursday over his recent use of the term “anchor baby.”

Bush told reporters that while he supports immigration reform the current rhetoric taking place around the issue, “is hurtful to a lot of people. ... I think we should tone down the rhetoric and get on with the solutions.”

A reporter asked Bush if he regretted his use of the term “anchor baby” on a radio show the night before.

“I don’t regret it. Do you have a better term? ... You give me a better term and I’ll you use it,” Bush said.

Reporters continued, one asking Bush if he thought his use of the term was “bombastic,” drawing some fire from the usually cool Bush.

“I didn’t use it as my own language,” Bush said. “You want to get to the policy, for a second? I think people born in this county ought to be American citizens, OK? Now we’ve got that over with.”

Reporters then asked Bush what he thought about Donald Trump’s Wednesday night comments about how Bush hasn’t been drawing large crowds.

“He’s been a Democrat longer than being a Republican. I have fought for conservative causes all of my adult life,” Bush said, adding that in a few months after voters have had the chance to “compare and contrast,” Bush’s and Trump’s records, Republican voters will see Bush is the candidate for them.
